Signage as we head out of Dayton indicating that 14 may be closed. Note the peeling legend, a good indicator this was installed by a Montana contractor

US-14 closes in 3 miles when it’s flashing, staying open just to serve a few houses west of town. We’re about to climb straight up those mountains

Location: US-14 and Horseshoe Rd, Sheridan Cty
After we pass the last little neighborhood before beginning to drive straight up, we’re told this is where 14 would close

Reassurance shield as we make our way up the hill. This hill is a challenge on a vehicle’s transmission- the speed limit is 55 but a normal car can’t comfortably manage more than 35 or 40. Got stuck behind an RV and went 15 MPH another time I drove it.

Location: US-14 and US-14 Alt, Sheridan Cty
After we finally make it to the top of the hill, we come to a junction with US 14 Alternate.

Left for 14, right for 14 Alternate. 14 Alternate, former Wyoming Highway 14, and before that US-420 (420 woooo), takes a northerly route. It’s a more technically challenging drive and probably takes a little longer, but is quite pretty. The routes rejoin in Cody.
