Montana Highway 38, MT-1 to US-93

Location: Skalkaho Pass Rd and MT-1, Granite Cty

Reassurance shield as Montana 38 begins. This is an off-system state highway maintained partially by MDT, so doesn’t get mileposts.

40 miles to US-93 from here, over a very scenic, partially unpaved highway.

Location: Skalkaho Pass Rd and NF-102, Granite Cty

About 15 miles later, pavement ends and the road converts to forest service maintenance. As an off-system highway not maintained by the state, this probably isn’t even Montana 38 where it’s unpaved, but whatever.

There probably was a 38 shield here at one point, but for now it’s at least a reminder that we’re heading west.
