State Line Crossings

Washington Interstate Highways | U.S. Routes | State Routes 3-99 | State Routes 100-292 | State Routes 300-971 | Erroneous Signage |

This starts at US-101 and moves counter-clockwise around the state.

Oregon State Line:

(Astoria, OR) US-101 crosses into Oregon on the Astoria-Megler Bridge. There’s no signage on the bridge but once we get over we get a signpost at the immediate US-30 junction in Astoria. This is also the western terminus of US-30.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Cathlamet, WA) First two pictures are from SR 4 heading east towards Longview. 409 is a highway to the south tip of Puget Island where it catches a ferry down to Oregon and US-30. The third photo is at the end of 409 at the ferry terminal.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Longview, WA) Everything is very well signed directing you to Oregon from the I-5 exit for SR 432. There are a couple SR 432 to US-30 reassurance shields and then we come up on SR 433 which is the “Bridge to Oregon.” SR 433 actually enters Oregon as it owns and maintains the Lewis and Clark Bridge (with some ODOT funding), but it is signed as 433 from both sides and ODOT does not anywhere have a designation for this highway.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Vancouver, WA) No real welcome to Washington sign coming northbound, but an “Entering Washington” over the Columbia River bridge. The first exit for SR 14 follows shortly after

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Vancouver, WA) Plenty of advance mileage notices for I-84, an all Oregon control city sign, the “Entering Oregon” and Welcome to Oregon

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Dallesport, WA). US 197 is a short route in Washington, essentially serving as the westernmost free bridge off SR 14. This is the first and only reassurance shield. We descend to the Columbia River, cross a bridge, and enter in Oregon. Immediately after the state line we are welcomed to Oregon and come to a junction with I-84 and US 30.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Biggs, OR) We are directed to go straight for northbound US 97 just after the I-84 interchange. We cross over the Biggs Bridge into Washington where we are greeted with the first reassurance shield and a Welcome to Washington sign.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Umatilla, OR)  Advance signage for Washington 14 in Oregon before the Columbia River crossing. After the bridge a “Welcome to Washington” sign. Coming the other direction the final I-82 reassurance shield in Washington which actually looks to be an ODOT product, then advance signage for US-395/US-730 while still in Washington which looks like a WSDOT sign, then SU-395 and US-730 exit just after the state line. Oregon directs I-84 bound traffic along I-82

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Wallula, WA) Final reassurance shield and then a quiet crossing into Oregon along the Columbia River. We come to a junction with Oregon 37 and then come to the first Oregon reassurance shield several miles into Oregon

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(College Place, WA) First two signs from eastbound US-12, OR-11 is signed although it is about 6 miles south of the highway. That’s nice of them. Final reassurance shield and then the welcome to Oregon sign with an OR-11 reassurance marker.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Asotin, WA)  Final SR 129 reassurance shield in Anatone, as the road descends and climbs that vast canyon SR 129 turns into OR-3, the Welcome to Oregon sign, and the first Oregon 3 reassurance shield about 30 miles south of the border

—————————————————————————————————————————–

Idaho State Line:

(Clarkston WA) Interesting and abnormal “Entrance to the State of Idaho” sign unique to this bridge as we cross from Clarkston into Lewiston ID. Also as we cross the Snake we get an erroneous SR 12 sign overhead which is great since we are now in Idaho. US-12 immediately turns right at the end of the bridge, and we shift to the Idaho “scenic” poop brown US-12 shields, then “Welcome to Idaho” and then the first standalone reassurer guiding traffic towards US-95, a more Idaho-significant route

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Clarkston WA) Final ID-128 reassurance shield. Idaho carried over the 128 designatioin giving it a rare 3-digit state route (the others being ID-200 which is part of a multi-state state highway from Idaho to Minnesota all numbered 200 and then ID-162 which while I don’t know why it is numbered 162 is a minor highway in the Nez Perce Reservation branching off highway 62.). Then Welcome to Washington and the first reassurance shield just over the border.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Lewiston, ID) Signage for US-95 in Washington, as the NB access takes a different ramp. US-195 is very short in Idaho, mainly just some southbound lanes flowing into SB US-95, and this is the Welcome to Idaho sign

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Pullman WA) Final Idaho 8 reassurance shield, Welcome to Washington (in rare non “The Evergreen State” form which is appropriate given that we are in the middle of the Palouse), and the first SR 270 sign

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Palouse, WA) Final Idaho reassurance shield and then the only indication you are now in Washington are an Adopt-a-Highway sign and the SR 272 reassurance shield. From SR 27 south heading towards Palouse, SR 272 is signed as TO US-95

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Tekoa, WA) SR 274 is signed as TO US-95 from SR 27 south. SR 274 is then signed as TO US-95, and then right before the state line we are told to bear left TO US-95. We cross into Idaho, first ID-60 reassurance shield, the welcome to Idaho sign, and then the junction with US-95 a few miles east of the state line

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Rockford, WA) From SR 27, SR 278 is signed as TO US-95, then another SR 278 to US-95 sign along SR 278 with “Idaho” as a control city. Then we enter Idaho, are welcomed, get the first and only Idaho 58 reassurance shield, and come to a junction with US-95

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Spokane Falls, WA) After the SR 27 interchange we come up pretty fast on the state line which has an exit at State Line Rd. Then we enter Idaho and that is the first reassurance shield in Idaho.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Post Falls, ID) Signage for SR 290 to Idaho 53, of which there are three, and then the final reassurance shield before the state line

—————————————————————————————————————————–

/(Newport, WA) US-2 comes up on junction Idaho 41/unsigned SR 41 which straddle the state line. No “junction” banner, but a junction nonetheless. US-2 crosses into Idaho, you can see the first Idaho reassurance shield in the background. Idaho 41 shield which is technically in Washington, Washington 41 being unmarked. Idaho 41 bears left and heads off the state line and loses the SR 41 concurrency, Welcome to Idaho.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

British Columbia International Boundary:

(Kelway BC) SR 25 recently opened as a 24 hour crossing, SR 31 uses “Canada” as a control city and I am fairly sure this is the only instance in the state that “Canada” is used as such, We come up on the border crossing

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Northport, WA) First reassurance shield after the border, otherwise quite boring

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Laurier, WA) Outdated border info sign- SR 25 which is much closer than Eastport Idaho is now open 24 hours. Final reassurance shield before the border. Heading south from the border is an unconventional and highly specific metric speed limit sign

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Danville, WA) Final reassurance shield before the crossing

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Oroville, WA) Pretty boring border here, that’s the last reassurance shield before the customs facility I couldn’t get a good picture of.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Sumas, WA). This is a fun one. First is the last BC-11 shield, and then 500 metres before the border Canada tells us SR 9 is coming up. Pretty much immediately after crossing is JCT SR 547 and then right after that we get the first southbound reassurance shield and the Welcome to Washington sign.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Lynden, WA) Final reassurance shield and then as we come up on Canadian Customs we get the “CANADIAN BORDER AHEAD STOPPPP” sign complete with Canadian Flag which I’ve never seen before (not the flag…the flag on a sign like that)

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Blaine, WA) Only signage along SR 543 as we come up on the border, this one mainly serving commercial traffic which is not authorized to use I-5

—————————————————————————————————————————–

(Blaine WA) I-5 turns into BC-99 and SR 543, the truck entrance, turns into BC-15. Exit 276, the SR 548 exit, is the last exit before the border. Various pictures of the Peace Arch.
