U.S. Route 191, AZ State Line to US-163

Location: US-191 at the Arizona Line, San Juan Cty

Reassurance shield as we enter Utah. 191 transitions out of Navajo maintenance into UDOT maintenance. The route heads all the way to Wyoming, near the Flaming Gorge.

A few miles later, we’ll approach the northern terminus of US-163.

Location: US-191 and US-163, San Juan Cty

Turn right for 191 north and left for 163 south. 163 is a violation of AASHTO numbering criteria as US-63 is in Missouri. I think the intent was to number it as a daughter of US-160, but who knows. Before 191 was extended this direction, US-163 north followed its path to I-70. Now it ends here and is one of the shorter routes in the system, just heading southwest to Kayenta, Arizona.

Follow 191 to Bluff and Blanding and 163 to Mexican Hat and the Monument Valley. 163 may be the most scenic per mile route in the system, as it is very short and very scenic.
